10 Cycling Challenges To Make 2019 Your Best Year Ever

(swooshing and metal scrape) – Now we are coming to the end of 2018 it’s probably a good time to
start thinking about 2019. And there’s no better
way to start the new year than having some goals or challenges. So in this video I’m
gonna walk you through 10 cycling challenges, some you may have achieved and some maybe way out your comfort zone. But hopefully there’ll be a few in there that’ll give you a good
idea for your next goal in 2019. (upbeat music) Completing your first 100
miles is no mean feat. And it is a great goal if you’re getting in cycling and you wanted to take
it that bit further. And as you saw it may
seem incredibly daunting, but with some consistent training and well, some pit stops, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve. So when you do your first century, pit stops are highly recommended. Especially as there’s no rules
to the amount of pit stops you can have. (upbeat music) Point to point are not only fun but they also give you the ability to travel further afield than well, your local loop around your local area. I mean, actually one of
Ollie’s favorite tactics, is to wake up in the morning, see which way the wind is going and well, go the opposite direction. And then get the train back. But it is actually a great
challenge to start in the city and then end up in another city. So for example, have a coffee in one town and a beer in the next. (slurping) Something great to tell
your cycling friends and also a really good
sense of achievement. (upbeat music) So you’ve ridden from city to city. But why not push the boat
out a little bit more? And travel across an entire
country or state by bike? Perhaps choose well, a small country or
state for your first one or plan a multi day route
across a country or state that you’ve never
imagined you’d go across. There’s no better way to
see a country or state than by bike. Actually, Sy did do a route across Whales in one day, so could this be
the perfect challenge for you? (upbeat music) So you’ve ridden a few sportives and you enjoy riding with
a club on the weekends. And you’ve even watched the pros race up these iconic mountains. Mountains that have shaped
the sport of cycling. And well, you’ve never made the commitment to do it yourself. Well this is your year. Why not sign up for an events
like Le Mont Mot, L’Etape or even The Maratona. These events will take
you over these picturesque and the most beautiful roads in the world. It will be a fantastic
personal achievement and also when you’re watching
the pros ride the grand tours, well you’ll know exactly
what it feels like. (upbeat music) The Taiwan KOM Challenge. One that we here at GCN love, but also a challenge not
for the faint hearted. At 100 kilometers long
and with an elevation gain of 3,275 meters up a mountain,
called the Hilayan Pass, this takes climbing to whole new level. I mean, literally. And it’s definitely a
challenge for the climbers. So is this a challenge
that fits you for 2019? (upbeat music) while we are on the subject of climbing, we have got to include an Everesting. I mean Everest is a mountain that stands a staggering 8,814 meters high
and is the tallest mountain in the world. And an Everesting is about doing the
equivalent elevation gain on a mountain or hill of your choice. I mean going up the mountain
or hill and back down as many times as it takes to, well, get to the amount of
elevation gain as it would if you climbed Everest. I mean it sounds horrific
and incredibly painful, but how much sweeter
would the achievement be when you achieve it. And I guess if we think about it if Ollie can do it, we all can. (upbeat music) doing a multi stage event
could be the cherry on the top for you if you’ve been
riding for a few years. I mean it’s one thing
doing one day events, but it’s a whole different ball game when you chuck in three,
five, or even seven days of riding back to back. I mean if you’re looking
for a really tough multi stage event, then well
the Haute Route is one for you. And as it happens, actually, we’re doing the Haute Route
Oman in March next year. And if you want to push
the boat out even more, then why not choose a
multi stage event off road like the Cape Epic for example. An event I would actually love to do, I mean it sounds tough,
gruesome, terrible, painful, sounds perfect I guess. (upbeat music) Now we’re on the subject
of back to back riding, what about bike packing? I mean, exploring the outdoors, sleeping under the stars and forgetting about
the heart race straps, power meters and other metrics. I mean, really rekindle
that feeling of freedom when you first learned to ride a bike. I mean, everyone should do it and everyone should experience it and trust me, you will not regret it. (upbeat bluegrass music) This is an epic race spanning the entire breadth of America with seven days nonstop riding. This will test both your physical
and your mental strength. And this is an event
definitely on my bucket list. I mean for me it’s an amateur’s version of the Tour de France or
arguably even harder. That one is fully supported,
but why not a bike packing one. For example the Transcontinental. Or even Brittany to Bulgaria in 2019. I mean that would be an epic adventure and a challenge of a lifetime. (mysterious music) Yes, before you say it, it’s a triathlon, but it’s one of the ultimate
endurance challenges. And I’ve been told you can wear socks for two of the disciplines within it. It’s three marathons in
three different sports consecutively with no rest. Starting off with a 2.4
mile swim, and then 112 mile solo time and to finish
off a 26 mil marathon. This is an event that has
aways been on my bucket list and one that’ll push the limits
no matter how fit you are (exhales). It’s a tough one. There you have it, cycling challenges. So I hope that gives you a good idea of a challenge to tackle in the new year.   1. My goals for 2019 are to Ride 800km in 4 days, add 50 watts to my ftp , enter my first tt and hopefully survive the tcr (if I get in).

  2. A lot of these all seem a bit racy (I mean how many people are realistically going to do the RAAM?), I can recommend doing something like a permanent brevet (Raid Pyrénéen, Randonnées Alpines, etc) taken at your own pace or with a tour, great fun and a definite challenge.

  3. So… just list most of the well known things to do… not exactly out of the ordinary if you’re a subscriber. Should actually name lesser known events

  4. Went to every village in my county/district (German: Landkreis) in 2016, always starting from home. Turns out you can fill an entire summer with tours of sixty to one-hundred kilometers and discover a lot of beautiful roads nearby. Did it on an XC bike using some gravel shortcuts here and there back then. Will try to do the same thing on a road bike next year.

  5. Mine is climbing Alpe du Zwift under 2 hours without puking my guts out and /or having a heart attack on my bike ( come to think of it, doing both at the same time would be the real challenge). Glad there is even more room for improvement! Go GCN 😉 !

  6. Already signed up for 3 next year. New Forest sportive in April, 81 miles. Birmingham Velo my first attempt at a century in May and the London to Brighton in June! Bring on 2019!

  7. I did my 1st century and 200km this year. For 2019 the goal is to do the first two century, but i do not know if i can. Also i did my first race (local small one) and ended 5 laps from the winner, would like to be 4 laps behind next year.
    P.S. I have a stell MTB 26" adapted to be like a hybrid.
    P.S. 2: The most important goal, get a better job to buy a better bike! 🙂

  8. June of 2019 will see me and 2 of my pals , total combined age of 187 , ride up the Pico de Veleta in Spain 🇪🇸 3380 metres climbing ! This is for my 60th birthday and to raise money fo the Children’s Heart Unit Foundation. Our goal is to raise £1000 per 1000 metres of climbing . 😎👍

  9. Goal for 2019: do a 3 day bikepacking at home or in Europe, maybe try the Alpe d’Huez or Ventoux, a couple of gravel races (never raced before), keep commuting and stay healthy.

  10. Great ideas! I’d love to do a few of those. Gran Fondo, bikepacking and a Century too. But also, I think I may join a local group too.

  11. Wife, family, and job all have to be on board, so I've been restricted to every other year.
    2013 completed double century 200 miles in one ride.
    2015 rode across the USA in 26 days.
    2017 rode the Blue Ridge Parkway in 6 days.
    2019 planning on Epic gravel ride of the Great Allegheny Passage 334 miles Pittsburgh to DC over 3 days.

  12. 2018 was a year of loss for me
    Lost my grandpa, grandma, ma, gaming rig, best friend, my Cervélo P5 and the deadliest blow of all was my shining beacon, the last glimmer of a companion, my dog.

  13. Not a goal per se, but it sure would be nice to not have to read about so many awful incidents of cars running cyclists off the road. Let’s hope for a safer 2019

  14. Long term goal is the Mammoth, California, Gran Fondo for the first time (Mammoth is over 8,000 feet in elevation in the Sierra) and n a reasonable amount of time. Many interim goals to get there from the shape that I'm in now.

  19. Bulgaria to Brittany !!!!! You've wouldn't have made it over the start line let alone the first check point ! ~4000km, 48,000m of climbing……at least 175miles a day to make it in time for the party ! ……fingers crossed.

  20. Goal for 2019: Try and get an 11 speed.

    Currently riding a steel frame 8 speed trekking/gravel bike, And I love climbing! What keeps me really excited and able to push through climbs, Is knowing I’m doing them at a pretty good avg speed considering my bike weighs over 30lbs and it lacks the proper amount of gears. 😅🤦🏻‍♂️
    Gonna be soooo easy on a lighter bike with more gears.

    -Ride 200 miles in one day
    -Complete 2nd Dunwich Dynamo (Completed last year but really good fun)
    -Survive all of above.

  23. Great vid! But given that 2019 is a Paris-Brest-Paris year, the total absence of randonneuring/audax from your list is a bit disappointing. Challenges can range from your completing your first 200k brevet – which would be more my end of the spectrum – to achieving super-randonneur status, or even to completing the previously mentioned, once-every-four-years, 1200k, Paris-Brest-Paris. They also have multi-year distinctions for the truly ambitious, like the "randonneur 5000" and "randonneur 10000" awards. In fact, I think GCN should do a "what is randonneuring" episode…

  24. Goals for Cycling in 2019
    – Get Clips
    – Replace the bike with a Mid-Ranger
    – Ride 4 Century Rides
    – No Serious Crash Injuries

  25. I have my eye on a point-to-point on Skyline Drive along the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. It will double as a century ride as well. I'm hungry just thinking about it.

  26. 100k – done (imperial, not metric ;-), 2200m climbing ), 100k – done again (metric this time, again with 2238m of climbing), then got somewhat injured, gained about 15kg – so the primary goal for 2019 is to lose the grease and – climb again.

  27. Triple Bypass in Colorado looks interesting – 117 miles with about 11,000 feet of climbing. Check it out at

    If you're riding your bike within the US in areas close to the Mexico border, be prepared to get pestered by the Border authorities, especially if you don't 'look American'. Sorry, but that's the kind of country the US is these days.

  29. Being "new again" to cycling in this past year, and completing my first metric century. My goals for 2019 are a century ride in the spring and a double century by fall.

  30. I Will do what a lot of Sweds do, I Will do the Vätternrundan. 300 km around the lake Vättern in Sweden. 20000 are doing it every year.

  31. The Indian Pacific Wheel Race ticks a few of those boxes… across Australia from Fremantle to Sydney, unsupported, bikepacking, multi-day, epic…

  32. I want to do to the Eurovelo 6 from where I live in eastern France all the way to Budapest, Hungary. 1330km, over 6 countries in 3 weeks then getting the train back home.

  34. Signed up for my challenges for 2019: the Dirty Reiver 130km in April as a warm up then the biggie – the South Downs Way 100 mile CX sportive in July with an overnight in Eastbourne before riding 115 road miles back home.

  38. So, when is GCN going to RAGBRAI? It's not a race. It's a 7-day cycling party across the state of Iowa. It would be worth checking out.

  39. This year I rode my first km century and got my ftp back up to pre-injury level. Next year, Gran Fondo Van-to-Whistler and a mile century are my primary goals. Combined with some cross-country ski goals and maybe a local MTB race or two.

  42. Hang on – 3000m in 100km to me that doesn’t seem like much.
    I did a 60k training Ride in Derbyshire & managed 1600m of elevation gain & the route in & out of Ilkestone was pretty flat.

  44. I do a route a few times a year when we visit our daughter its a 40km run in the quantocks that does 1100m of climbing, my aim to beat the 2 hours for that route , probably won't achieve it but will have laugh trying.

  45. This year I'm riding the PRL Surrey 100 then a week later starting a 1100 mile two week supported tour. I think I'll be in the best shape of my life after all that.

  46. For the UK, try Chase The Sun, from Sheppey to Burnham-on-Sea (200 ish miles)!
