BACK WITH BOBBY BALLARD AND THE JOPLIN FAMILY YMCA. HE IS TALKING ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF CYCLING. SPIN CLASS OR BICYCLING OR WHAT? YES, TO ALL OF THE ABOVE. YOU KNOW, I’VE BEEN ON HERE AND WE’VE TALKED ABOUT SWIMMING, RUNNING. WELL, LET’S DO THE LAST THING OF A TRIATHALON. AND GO CYCLING. AT THE Y, WE HAVE ANY KIND OF AN EXERCISE THAT IS GREAT, BUT CYCLING IS ONE THING THAT ALMOST ANYBODY CAN DO. AND SENIORS, IT USES ALL OF YOUR MAJOR MUSCLES. IT BUILDS STRENGTH AND STAMINA STAMINA FOR THE CYCLIST. IS THAT HOW YOU DO IT? OF COURSE. I’M USUALLY UPSIDE DOWN. ON THE GROUND. BUT IT IS SUCH LOW IMPACT. THERE IS LIKE SOME OF THE BIKES WE HAVE AT THE Y. WE HAVE STAND-UP BIKES. AND THEN WE ACTUALLY HAVE STATIONARY BIKES AND WE HAVE RECUMBANT. WHERE YOU KIND OF LAY BACK ON IT. THERE IS A SPIN CLASS THAT WE HAVE AT THE Y. I THINK THOSE ARE HARD. MEDIUM TO HIGH INTENSITY. BECAUSE WE ACTUALLY WATCH A MOVIE OR VIDEO AND WE WILL BE CYCLING. WE COULD BE IN FRANCE, ANYWHERE. AND IT IS SO MUCH FUN. WE DO HAVE A GOOD TIME. I AM USUALLY IN THE BACK. YOU CAN’T SEE ME. I WOULD LIKE TO DO THAT WHERE IT KEPT MY ATTENTION AT THE SAME TIME. IT DOES. WE HAVE GREAT INSTRUCTORS WHO TELL YOU, EVERYBODY UP OFF THE SEAT, WE’RE GOING UP A HILL. IT’S SUCH A GOOD TIME. IN DOOR CYCLING, THAT IS WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT AT THE Y. BETWEEN THE SPIN CLASSES AND THEN ALL OF THE OTHER, JUST THE BIKES WE HAVE IN THE EXERCISE AREA TOO. I HAVE A 97-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO COMES EVERY TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. AND RIDES 30 MINUTES. AND ON A GOOD DAY, HE WILL GO THREE AND A HALF MILES. HE IS 97. I DON’T DO THAT. I HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE, A LOT YOUNGER THAN HIM THAT DON’T DO THAT. I’VE GOT TO STEP IT UP. IT IS SO MUCH FUN. LIKE I SAY, ANY EXERCISE, WE COULD START YOU OFF AND LIKE ON THE RUCUMBANT BIKE, YOU CAN PEDAL, WE HAVE SOME THAT YOU CAN USE YOUR ARMS ALSO. BUT IT’S VERY USER FRIENDLY FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT HAD ANY EXERCISE AT ALL. AND THAT IS WHAT WE’RE AFTER. JUST PEOPLE WHO NEVER GOT TO DO IT BEFORE. THERE IS A GREAT TRIATHALON COMING UP SUNDAY. ARE YOU IN IT? I AM HELPING THIS YEAR. BUT I’VE DONE IT BEFORE. AND IT’S CALLED SUMMER ROUND-UP. IT’S NORTH, IT’S AT M HIGHWAY AND THEIR BASELINE THERE. IF YOU EVER WANT TO GO SEE SOME SUPERB ATHLETES RIDE, WE HAVE HAD A LOT STARTED AT THE Y AND NEVER RIDDEN A BIKE BEFORE. ALL KINDS OF WONDERFUL CYCLING GROUPS AROUND THE AREA. I BELONG TO ONE WHERE WE RIDE ON SUNDAYS. WE START AT THE CARL JUNCTION HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN WE WILL GO WEST AND JUST GET ON IN TO KANSAS AND TURN AROUND AND COME BACK. IT’S ALL ON COUNTRY ROADS. SO MUCH FUN. WE LIKE PEOPLE TO COME OUT AND CHECK OUT THE Y AT JOPLIN FAMILY Y.ORG. OR GIVE US A CALL, 781-YMCA. OR COME BY. WE CAN GET YOU IN ON A DAY PASS. AND WE’LL ALSO TAKE YOU AROUND AND SHOW YOU AND LET YOU TAKE A SPIN CLASS OR JUST GET YOU STARTED OFF ON EXERCISE. YES. I LOVE THAT YOU HAVE THE KIND, I CAN’T REMEMBER WHAT YOU CALL THEM. WHERE YOU SIT BACK. RECUMBANT. KIND OF LIKE RECLINING. KIND OF WHAT WE’RE DOING THERE. IT’S SO HARD TO GET STARTED. ONCE YOU DO, YOU THINK WHY WASN’T I DOING THIS ALL ALONG? PEOPLE FEEL SO MUCH BETTER WHEN THEY DO EXERCISE. AND YOU KNOW, WE KIND OF JAB THEM IF THEY DON’T SHOW UP FOR A WEEK OR TWO. AND SAY WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? COME OUT AND GIVE IT A TRY. AND WE’LL HAVE A GREAT TIME, I PROMISE. OKAY. THAT’S GREAT. A LOT OF THE FUN, WHEN I GO TO BOOT CAMP, IT’S COMING TO SEE EVERYBODY THERE. IT KEEPS ME GOING. SOCIAL CLUB TOO. GOOD PLAN.
