Mountain Biking for Tips, Techniques & Etiquette : Understand the Tools Needed for Mountain Biking

Hi I’m Aaron Phillips with Expert Village
and as you go mountain biking as a beginning mountain biker, you’re going to run into some
mechanical problems. It’s the rule, not the exception. The most common thing that happens
with bikes unfortunately is flat tires. In mountain biking often times you get what’s
called snake bites, which is when the tire compresses and you get punctures on both sides
of the tube, so you have two holes in your tube. You want to pull off your wheel, pull
of that tire, and get to work with your basic tools. Basic tools include a tube so you can
replace that damaged tube, so you want to make sure to have a tube. At least one, sometimes
two depending on the length of your ride. Supplement the tube with the patch kit so
that if you end up with more punctures than you can handle them with the patch kit. You
also want to ride with tire levers to insure you can take the tire off from the rim. And
also a multi tool, this is your multi tool. This will allow you to fix a broken chain,
repair spokes. It’s got screwdriver attachments of all varieties. It even has torques, different
sizes of Allan keys and they all of course need an eight millimeter allen key when your
crank arm starts to get loose this is a really important allen key or allen wrench to have.
So it’s got eighteen tools in all and it will allow you to do everything from repairing
a broken chain to tightening all the many bolts on a bike. So just bring basic tools
every time you go. This is just a seat pouch you can mount right underneath your saddle
or seat and this will ride along with you and when you really need those tools they’re
there for you.
