Top 5 Motorist Safety Tips

Cycling is a fun and healthy activity
for the whole family to enjoy but it’s important that you know how to operate a
motor vehicle around them. Here are top 5 tips for operating your motor vehicle
around cyclists. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. This includes
checking your mirrors and blind spots before you start moving and before turns. When parking look around to ensure it’s safe to open your door so
you avoid what’s called dooring. Many times drivers do not check their
surroundings and open their door as a cyclist is approaching, causing serious
collisions. Do not follow too closely behind a cyclist. Since they don’t have
brake lights it makes it hard to know when they’re slowing or braking. Bike lanes
are for cyclists only. You can use them when making turns but be extra cautious
when entering them. Leave a distance of 1 meter between your vehicle and the
bicycle. This distance must be held until the car is safely past the bicycle.
Failure to do so could result in a fine of up to $500 and 2 demerit points. If we
all use the road in a respectful way we will ensure a much safer cycling season
for everyone. Let’s all make a commitment and show
that we care to share
